St. Cloud Kiwanis Club President, Sam Stone presented a check for $500 to Lincoln Elementary School teacher, Melanie Jiskra. Jiskra is coordinator of the P.A.K--R.A.T program at Lincoln. The acronym stands for People and Kids, Reading A Lot Together. The program's objective is to get each student to read 30 books during a 6 week period. Each week the student takes home a book. The student's parent, sibling, or another adult is expected to read the book with the student. After reading the book, the student discusses the book with his/her parent and then respond to questions provided by the program. The money donated by Kiwanis will be used to purchase books the children will read.
In addition to Ms Jiskra, Kiwanis members heard from principal Hugh Skaja, superintendent Steve Jordahl, and school board member Bruce Hentges. All three expressed their appreciation for the Kiwanis contribution. In addition to the $500 donation, Kiwanis sponsors a K-Kids Club at Lincoln. Principal Skaja also invited Kiwanis members to volunteer their time reading to students or to participate in other activities.
After enjoying a school lunch, Kiwanis members were entertained with a song performed by Lincoln Kindergarten Students. The song was based on the colors they were studying in class.
